efficacy of extracorporeal shockwave therapy in frozen shoulder

چکیده
background: frozen shoulder has always been considered important because of the impact on the quality‑of‑life and long period of illness. therefore, the use of noninvasive and safe techniques that can speed up the healing process of the disease is important. methods: this study was a randomized clinical trial study on patients suffering from frozen shoulder who were referred to isfahan university of medical sciences hospitals in 2011 and 2012. a total of 36 patients were enrolled in the study. eligible patients were allocated into two groups. intervention group received extracorporeal shockwave therapy (eswt) once a week for 4 weeks. the control group received sham shockwave therapy once a week for 4 weeks. on the follow‑up period, changes in individual performance and the amount of pain and disability were assessed by the shoulder pain and disability index (spadi) questionnaire and the range of motion changes were assessed by a goniometer. data obtained were analyzed using spss software. results: variance analysis revealed a difference in the mean pain and disability score of the spadi questionnaire, flexion, extension, and abduction, external rotation of involved shoulder between two groups before and after the shockwave therapy ( p < 0.05). improvement was more satisfactory in the intervention group, but the mean internal rotation did not differ significantly in two groups ( p > 0.05). conclusions: the use of eswt seems to have positive effects on treatment, quicker return to daily activities, and quality‑of‑life improvement on frozen shoulder.

PURPOSE To evaluate the impact of a slow gated treatment rate on the efficacy of extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (SWL). PATIENTS AND METHODS From August 1990 to July 2002, 40,462 SWL procedures were performed using the slow frequency electrocardiography (ECG)-gated lithotripter (82.5%) and fast frequency ECG-ungated (17.5%) modes for the Medstone STS lithotripter. Treatment characteristi...

Purpose: Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is a relatively new method in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders such as plantar fasciitis. This study aimed to compare two methods of treatment with extracorporeal shockwave and stretching in athletes with chronic plantar fasciitis. Methods: The study was a randomized clinical trial. A total of 30 male athletes with chronic plantar fasc...

The sources of shockwave generation include electrohydraulic, electromagnetic and piezoelectric principles. Electrohydraulic shockwaves are high-energy acoustic waves generated under water explosion with high voltage electrode. Shockwave in urology (lithotripsy) is primarily used to disintegrate urolithiasis, whereas shockwave in orthopedics (orthotripsy) is not used to disintegrate tissues, ra...

Since the introduction of Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) for the treatment of nephrolithiasis, the indication has been extended and the technical possibilities of ESWT have been considerably improved. Besides the classical indication of “kidney stones”, extra-corporeal shockwaves are also used in gall stones, pancreatic stones and salivary calculi [1-3]. In orthopedics ESWT is indicate...
متن کاملExtracorporeal shockwave therapy for peyronie disease.
While surgery is the mainstay of therapy for Peyronie disease requiring correction of angulation, interest has grown in the application of extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) as a minimally invasive approach. This article reviews the current literature reporting the use of ESWT for Peyronie disease.
